Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of space.
